I'm in the middle of reading William Poundstone's Fortune's Formula (The Untold Story of the Scientific Betting System That Beat the Casinos and Wall Street). It's a cracking read, bringing together information theory, gambling, investments and the mafia. Years ago I read his The Recursive Universe which contains a wonderful implementation of Conway's Life, which uses a recursive data structure. I recommend both books.
